Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third child of the family. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as an attendant or cleaner so that they could survive. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. However, she left school in the span of two years in order to pursue an acting career. She faced many obstacles on the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. The following job she got was the "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
